Russ Feingold strikes again

The following has been posted over at DKos:

It seems Russ Feingold has caught AG Alberto Gonzalez in a lie during his confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee in January, '05. Ole' AGAG denied knowing anything about warrantless wiretaps, even though he was signing off on such a program every 45 days, and said that he would notify Congress if any such thing came up.

Feingold has sent AGAG a letter demanding an explanation. I don't think that's enough. See Extended Entry:

Many of us spent the last few days and weeks calling Senate offices, faxing, emailing in support of the late-blooming filibuster of Alito's nomination. We accomplished a lot - in just a matter of days things went from absolutely no one talking about a filibuster to 25 Senators voting to support our position. Senators Kerry and Kennedy provided the in-house leadership, but it was those of us (mainly) outside the Beltway that really stirred the pot and accomplished something.

Here's my suggestion: let's stir things up again. Let's start by contacting Feingold's office (202-224-5323) or russell_feingold@feingold.sen.gov and asking him to call for an independent prosecutor to determine whether Gonzalez lied under oath to Congress. Then, once he has publicly made that call, we will start calling all of the Democratic Senators to ask them to support the independent prosecutor. The next step will be the media: write the NYTimes, LATimes, WaPO, etc. to get them behind us.

Please call Feingold today and 1)thank him for the great work he has done and leadership he has provided; and 2)ask him to call for an independent prosecutor to investigate Alberto Gonzalez's lies under oath to Congress.

It was rigged, Bush put Gonzalez in the Attorney Gen position, so he didn't have to put him up for Supreme Crt justice.  Gonzalez might not have been as hard line as Roberts or Alito would have been on abortion.

How is that "rigged" as opposed to just nominating the people you want for various positions?

Re: Russ Feingold strikes again (none / 0)

It was rigged because Bush said he would unite the country the country and wouldn't apply an anti-abortion litmus test on a judicial nominee and he nominated and appointed a judge that he knew that would be a sure vote against Roe as oppose to nominating someone like Alberto Gonzalez that wouldn't mind Roe.  Instead, in order to get rid of Alberto, he put him in a position, where he can't hurt Bush politically.

Re: Russ Feingold strikes again (none / 0)

mmm, I really hope that we've got him here, but couldn't Gonzales just say that he didn't want to leak a secret program? He didn't actually say that the program didn't exist, did he? All I can find is him sort of prancing around it. Is there a quote from Gonzales saying he didn't know of a program like that?
